Educated at Balliol College, Oxford, served as Assistant Master at Rugby School (1894-1903), Master of Marlborough College (1903-11) (the first layman to hold that post), and Headmaster of Charterhouse, Godalming (1911-35). He was knighted for his distinguished career.
