Pow­ell was the son of George B. Fi­thi­an and Har­ri­et B. Mason, and husband of Julia C. McCormick (mar­ried 1885, liv­ing in Cam­den in 1900, 1910 and 1920).

He was mu­sic di­rect­or for the pub­lic schools in Cam­den, New Jer­sey.
