Shortly after Ferguson was born, his family moved to Dumbarton, then to Glasgow, where he attended the University. In 1880, he entered the Theological Hall of the United Presbyterian Church, and in 1883 that of the Evangelical Union Church. On October 15, 1884, he was inducted as minister of the Evangelical Union Church at Arbroath. He resigned that position on October 9, 1888, and the following year moved to Australia.
