During his studies, Ferretti met Swiss Protestants living in Florence, after a long inner struggle, he left Italy with his young wife, Marie Bruschi. He spent a year in Geneva, and in 1842, moved to London, where he edited the journal L’Eco di Savaronarola. In 1862, he returned to Florence, where he established a Protestant orphanage.
