Salvatore was the son of Girolamo Ferretti and Stella Stettiner, and husband of Maria Angela Fortunata Bruschi. His mother was a cousin of Giovanni Maria Mastai Ferretti, Pope Pius IX.
During his studies, Ferretti met Swiss Protestants living in Florence. After a long inner struggle, he left Italy with his wife. After a year in Geneva, he moved to London in 1842.
In London, he edited the journal L’Eco di Savaronarola, and founded the Asilo dei Fanciulli poveri italiani in Londra (Asylum for Poor Italian Children in London) in 1844.
In 1862, he returned to Florence, where he established the Istituto Ferretti, a Protestant orphanage.
