Biography

Salvatore was the son of Gi­ro­la­mo Fer­ret­ti and Stel­la Stet­tin­er, and hus­band of Ma­ria An­ge­la For­tu­na­ta Brus­chi. His mo­ther was a cou­sin of Gio­van­ni Ma­ria Mas­tai Fer­ret­ti, Pope Pi­us IX.

During his stu­dies, Fer­ret­ti met Swiss Pro­test­ants liv­ing in Flo­rence. Af­ter a long in­ner strug­gle, he left It­aly with his wife. Af­ter a year in Ge­ne­va, he moved to Lon­don in 1842.

In Lon­don, he ed­it­ed the jour­nal L’E­co di Sa­va­ro­na­ro­la, and found­ed the Asi­lo dei Fa­nci­ul­li po­ve­ri ita­li­ani in Lon­dra (Asy­lum for Poor Ital­ian Child­ren in Lon­don) in 1844.

In 1862, he re­turned to Flo­rence, where he es­tab­lished the Isti­tu­to Fer­ret­ti, a Pro­test­ant or­phan­age.
