George was the son of Andrew Jackson Fenn and Elizabeth Callahan. He moved to Texas with his parents in 1869. He seems to have married Lottie Louella Bell, probably after 1914. They were living in Bowie, Texas, in 1920.
He began studying music when quite young, and started teaching singing schools in 1883. He attended a normal taught by Rufus Cornelius in 1900; the Eureka Normal, Enterprise, Indian Territory (now Oklahoma); and three sessions of Anthony Showalter’s Southern Normal Music Institute: Alvord, Texas, 1902; Stephenville, Texas, 1901; and Thorsby, Alabama, 1903.
His first published Gospel song was The Glorious Marriage Supper of the Lamb.
