John was the son of John Farrer, member of an old Lowestoft family.
He was educated at the Pottergate Street House Academy, Norwich, whose principal was Charles Turner, an amateur musician and later mayor of the city.
Farrer and his wife were living in Lowestoft as of 1881, and Farrer was in Bournemouth in 1901.
