John was the son of John Far­rer, mem­ber of an old Lowe­stoft fa­mi­ly.

He was ed­u­cat­ed at the Pot­ter­gate Street House Acad­e­my, Nor­wich, whose prin­ci­pal was Charles Tur­ner, an am­a­teur mu­si­cian and lat­er may­or of the ci­ty.

Farrer and his wife were liv­ing in Lowe­stoft as of 1881, and Far­rer was in Bourne­mouth in 1901.
