Son of com­pos­er John B. Dykes, John was a Pro­fess­or of Pi­a­no at the Roy­al Acad­e­my of Mu­sic for half a century. Among his stu­dents was com­pos­er Rich­ard An­tho­ny Say­er Ar­nell (1917–2009). Dykes’ mu­sic ap­peared in The Eng­lish Hymn­al of 1906.
