The son of Pur­i­tans, Dry­den was ed­u­cat­ed at Tri­ni­ty Col­lege, Cam­bridge (BA 1654). He was ap­point­ed Po­et Laur­e­ate and His­tor­i­o­graph­er Roy­al in 1670.
