Son of a naval surgeon, Hamilton lost his father in infancy. He was ed­u­cat­ed for the min­is­try at the Un­i­ver­si­ty of Glas­gow. In 1793, he be­came pas­tor of the Se­cond Pres­by­ter­i­an Church in Bel­fast, and in 1816, of the Strand Street Church in Dub­lin. His works in­clude:
