Biography

A Bap­tist min­is­ter, John was the fa­ther of Rev­er­end George Tho­mas Dow­ling. He mar­ried twice: His first wife died of cho­le­ra, and he lat­er mar­ried Ma­ria S. Per­kins.

Educated in Eng­land, he re­ceived a Doc­tor of Di­vi­ni­ty de­gree from Tran­syl­van­ia Uni­ver­si­ty, Lex­ing­ton, Ken­tuc­ky, in 1846.

He served pas­tor­ates in Cat­skill, New York (1832–34); New­port, Rhode Is­land (1834–36); New York Ci­ty (1844–52 & 1856–68); Phi­la­del­phia, Penn­syl­va­nia (1852–56); and New­ark, New Jers­ey.
