A Baptist minister, John was the father of Reverend George Thomas Dowling. Educated in England, he received Doctor of Divinity degree from Transylvania University, Lexington, Kentucky, in 1846. He served pastorates in Catskill, New York (1832-34); Newport, Rhode Island (1834-36); New York City (1844-52 & 1856-68); Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (1852-56); and Newark, New Jersey.
