Son of Henry Jacob Diehl and Eleonora Bertles, Menno matriculated at Pennington Seminary, Pennington, New Jersey, in 1878, finished his studies at Dickinson College, Carlisle, Pennsylvania, then taught at Pennington Seminary (1885-86). In 1886, he married Emma Jane Cronover, and the same year joined the Detroit Annual Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church. As of 1892, he was serving in North Hope, Michigan.

Around 1893, when his wife Emma’s health began to fail, they moved to New Jersey, then Florida, hoping a change in climate would help. Emma died in Gainesville, Florida, the day before Christmas, 1894.
