Son of James Dickson of Edinburgh, William was educated at the High School and University of Edinburgh, then entered his father’s business. He was a prominent member of the Free Church of Scotland, and took a great interest in Sabbath School work, editing The Free Church Children’s Record for over 30 years. Starting in 1842, he wrote an annual New Year’s hymn.
