Dare joined the Pres­by­ter­i­an church in Green­wich, Cum­ber­land County, New Jer­sey, at age 23.

From 1817 to until his death, he was pastor of the Union Pres­by­ter­i­an Church, Col­er­ain Township, Penn­syl­van­ia. He also served as Dean of Boys at Wilm­ing­ton College, Del­a­ware. A musician as well as a minister and educator, his original compositions can be traced back to the popular Repository of Sacred Music, Part Second, 1820.
