John was the son of John and Ann Cunningham.
He attended St. John’s College, Cambridge, where he graduated with honors and subsequently became a Fellow.
In 1802, he became curate of Ripley, Surrey. In 1803, he moved to Ockham, and later to Clapham, where he was curate to John Venn. In 1811 he became vicar of Harrow, where he served half a century.
