Biography

George was the son of Cap­tain Tho­mas Cot­ton, who was killed in act­ion the year George was born.

George was edu­cat­ed at West­min­ster School and at Tri­ni­ty College (BA 1836).

He served as as­sist­ant mas­ter at Rug­by School (1837–52), and be­came head­mas­ter at Marl­bo­rough in 1852.

In 1858, he was ap­point­ed Bi­shop of Cal­cut­ta (now Kol­ka­ta), suc­ceed­ing Dr. Da­ni­el Wil­son.

However, Cot­ton ne­ver as­sumed the du­ties of his post: he drowned dis­em­bark­ing from his ship.
