Educated for the Congregational ministry, Cook married a daughter of César Malan. From 1839 to 1856, he was one of the secretaries of the American Tract Society, and originated the system of colportage. He subsequently served as secretary of the New York Sabbath Committee, and also edited the American Messenger.
