Edward was the son of Ezra and Mary Shaw Collier, and husband of Isabella G. James. He was educated at New York University (AB 1857, AM 1860, DD 1884) and Princeton Theological Seminary, Princeton, New Jersey (1860). A Congregational minister, he served pastorates in Saugerties, New York (1860-61); Armenia, New York (1861-64); and Kinderhook, New York (1864-1907, then pastor emeritus). His works include:
