Cole was educated at Bowdoin College, Brunswick, Maine, and Andover Theological Seminary, Newton Centre, Massachusetts (1887, DD 1898). After completing his studies, he became pastor of the Broadway Trinitarian Congregational Church in Taunton, Massachusetts. He later served at Wheaton College, Wheaton, Illinois, as trustee (1893-1925), Secretary of the Board (1895-1908), President of the Board (1908-25), and president of the college from 1897 until his death.
