Biography

Louis was the hus­band of Ad­ele T. Coerne.

He is re­mem­bered as a com­pos­er, con­duct­or, teach­er, hold­er of the first Am­er­ican PhD de­gree in mu­sic, and com­pos­er of the first Am­er­ican op­era per­formed in Eur­ope (Ze­no­bia, 1905).

He di­rect­ed the Uni­ver­si­ty of Wis­con­sin School of Mu­sic (1910–15), and taught at the Con­nec­ti­cut Col­lege for Wo­men (1915–22).
