Son of Silas Pritton Coe and Sophronia Woodward, Coe was a Presbyterian minister. He was educated at Marietta College, Ohio (1883), and McCormick Theological Seminary, Chicago, Illinois. Ordained by the Presbytery of Bloomington in 1889, he served in Wenona, Illinois (1889–92); Seattle, Washington (1892–93); Cory, Pennsylvania (1893–1900); and as assistant pastor at the Madison Square Presbyterian Church, New York City (1900–05). He edited the Bible Record (1905–06) and the Northfield Press, Northfield, Massachusetts (1909).
