Clem was the son of Will­iam D. T. Clem of Key­ser, West Vir­gin­ia, ne­phew of Meth­od­ist Epis­co­pal bi­shop Thom­as Bow­man, and cou­sin to Vir­gin­ia Clem, wife of writ­er Ed­gar Al­lan Poe. He spent most of his life in Key­ser.
