Alexander was the son of Samuel Clark and Christine McKenzie, and husband of Anne Marie Daughaday.
A Methodist Episcopal minister, he edited and wrote for The Schoolday Magazine (1851–59), and edited the Methodist Reporter in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (1870–79).
