Laura was the daughter of civil engineer Francis William Dibbin (1811–1874) and Sophia Ormiston; and wife of Thomas Chant, of Bridgewater, MRCS (Member of the Royal College of Surgeons), Licence of the Society of Apothecaries (LSA), (married 1877).
She was a Sister of the Sophia Wards in the London Hospital, and a lecturer on literary and social subjects.
