Biography

Carter was edu­cat­ed at Exe­ter Aca­de­my and Dart­mouth Col­lege, Ha­no­ver, New Hamp­shire.

After gra­du­at­ing from Dart­mouth in 1811, he taught school for a short time in Sal­is­bu­ry, New Hamp­shire, then in Port­land, Maine.

He was a Pro­fes­sor of Lang­uag­es at Dart­mouth (1817–19), and in 1819 be­came ed­it­or of the States­man news­pa­per in New York.

He al­so tra­veled in Eur­ope, pub­lish­ing two vol­umes of for­eign let­ters.
