Biography

Carmines was the son of Che­sa­peake Bay fish­ing boat cap­tain Al­vin Al­li­son Car­mines and Ka­the­rine Gra­ham.

His mu­sic­al gift showed it­self ear­ly: At age 13, he was on te­le­vi­sion in Nor­folk, Virg­in­ia, sing­ing Shoo Fly Pie while tap danc­ing and play­ing his own pi­ano ac­com­pa­ni­ment.
