William was the son of John Wall Call­cott and Eliz­a­beth Ma­ry Hutch­ins.

He studied music under his father and his brother-in-law William Hors­ley. He composed a great deal for the pi­a­no­for­te, and also glees, songs and anthems. He was for a time organist at Ely Place Chapel, then at St. Barn­a­bas’ Church, Ken­sin­gton, London, for 16 years.
