Biography

Caird was edu­cat­ed at King Ed­ward’s School, Birm­ing­ham; Pe­ter­house, Cam­bridge (1936–39); and Mans­field Col­lege, Ox­ford.

He was min­is­ter of the High­gate Con­gre­ga­tion­al Church, Lon­don (1943–46), then moved to Al­ber­ta, Ca­na­da, in 1946 to be­come pro­fes­sor of Old Tes­ta­ment at St. Ste­phens’ College.

In 1950, he be­came pro­fes­sor of Bib­li­cal Stu­dies at Mc­Gill Uni­ver­si­ty, Mont­ré­al. Re­turn­ing to Eng­land in 1959, he became Sen­ior Tu­tor at Mans­field Col­lege, Ox­ford.

At the time of his death he was Dean Ire­land’s Pro­fes­sor of the Exe­ge­sis of Ho­ly Scrip­ture at the Uni­ver­si­ty of Ox­ford.
