Byers was the son of An­drew Bye­rs (1827–1899) and song writer Nan­cy Byers, hus­band of Del­la Flor­ence Wick­er­sam, and bro­ther of Ja­cob Byers.

In 1890, he joined Dan­i­el War­ner & Bar­ney War­ren in evan­gel­is­tic work, and the next year was hired by the Gos­pel Trum­pet Pub­lish­ing Company as music editor. He left the company in 1922 for health reasons, & worked as an evan­gel­ist and pas­tor in Ida­ho & Or­e­gon before taking a pas­tor­ate in Sac­ra­men­to, Cal­i­for­nia, in 1934. His works include:
