Byers was the son of Andrew Byers (1827–1899) and song writer Nancy Byers, husband of Della Florence Wickersam, and brother of Jacob Byers.

In 1890, he joined Daniel Warner & Barney Warren in evangelistic work, and the next year was hired by the Gospel Trumpet Publishing Company as music editor. He left the company in 1922 for health reasons, & worked as an evangelist and pastor in Idaho & Oregon before taking a pastorate in Sacramento, California, in 1934. His works include:
