Biography

Henry was the son of George But­ler, head mas­ter of Har­row School, and Sar­ah Ma­ria Gray.

He was edu­cat­ed at Har­row and Tri­ni­ty Col­lege, Cam­bridge, and was a Fel­low of Tri­ni­ty.

After gra­du­ation, he be­came pri­vate sec­re­ta­ry for Will­iam Fran­cis Coop­er, and kept the min­utes of the Roy­al Com­mis­sion for re­build­ing the Na­tion­al Gal­le­ry.

He served as cur­ate of Great St. Ma­ry’s, Cam­bridge; head­mas­ter at Har­row School (1859–85); Dean of Glou­ces­ter (1885); Mas­ter of Tri­ni­ty Col­lege, Cam­bridge (1886–1918); and Vice Chan­cel­lor of Cam­bridge Uni­ver­si­ty (1889–90).
