Buckham attended the University of Vermont (AB 1885, honorary DD 1904) and Andover Newton Theological School, Newton, Massachusetts (now part of Yale Divinity School). After ordination in 1888, he served at the Second Church in Conway, New Hampshire, and the Crombie Street Church, Salem, Massachusetts (1890–1903). In 1903 he moved to the Pacific School of Religion, retiring as professor emeritus in 1937. In 1914, he gave the Nathaniel W. Taylor Lectures at Yale University. His works include:
