Buck attended the Merchant Tay­lors’ School, Guild­hall School of Music, Royal College of Music, and Wor­ces­ter College, Ox­ford (BA 1891, MA 1894, MusD 1897).

He served as Music Master of Rug­by School (1894); organist at Wells Cathedral (1896); Music Master, Har­row School (1901–27); Professor of Music, Dub­lin University (1910–20); and Professor of Music, Lon­don University (1925–30). Knighted in 1937, his works include:
