Biography

Herbert was the son of Lu­ther­an min­is­ter Hen­ry Bro­ker­ing and Cla­ra Ma­rie Bro­ker­ing.

He was edu­cat­ed at Wart­burg Col­lege, Wa­ver­ly, Io­wa; the Uni­ver­si­ty of Iowa (MA, child psy­cho­lo­gy); Wart­burg Se­mi­na­ry; the Ev­an­ge­li­cal Lu­ther­an Theo­lo­gic­al Se­mi­na­ry (now Tri­ni­ty Lu­ther­an Se­mi­na­ry), Co­lum­bus, Ohio; and the Uni­ver­si­ties of Kiel and Er­lang­en, Ger­ma­ny.

For a de­cade, he served Lu­ther­an pas­tor­ates in Ce­dar­hurst, New York; Pitts­burgh, Penn­syl­van­ia; and San An­ton­io, Tex­as.

He then worked in the par­ish edu­ca­tion de­part­ment of the Am­er­ican Lu­ther­an Church (1960–70).

He wrote over 30 books.
