Brinenstool earned a business degree, and 1895 in moved with his wife to Los Angeles. He first worked as a journalist, but later became a freelancer, writing poetry, and publishing articles in Hunter-Trader, Sunset, Frontier Times, Outdoor Life, Winners of the West, and other magazines. He is also known for biographies of the Indian leaders Crazy Horse, Red Cloud, and Dull Knife. His other works include:
