Biography

Breed was edu­cat­ed at the Ci­ty Uni­ver­si­ty of New York, Un­ion Theo­lo­gic­al Se­mi­na­ry, and Prince­ton Uni­ver­si­ty (gra­du­at­ed 1847).

A year af­ter be­ing li­censed to preach, he went to Mont­pel­ier Springs, Geor­gia, where he taught for a year to earn funds to pay his way through se­mi­na­ry. Dur­ing that time he al­so served as a sup­ply preach­er for a lo­cal Pro­test­ant Epis­co­pal con­gre­ga­tion.

In 1847, Breed mar­ried and moved to Steu­ben­ville, Ohio, to serve a new Pres­by­te­ri­an church there.

In 1856, Breed be­came first pas­tor of the West Spruce Street Pres­by­te­ri­an Church in Phi­la­del­phia, a post he held the rest of his life.
