Breed was educated at the City University of New York, Union Theological Seminary, and Princeton University (graduated 1847). Just one year after being license preached, he went south to Montpelier Springs, Georgia, where he taught for a year to earn funds to pay his way through seminary. During that time he also served as a supply preacher for a local Protest Episcopal congregation.

In 1847, Breed married and moved to Steubenville, Ohio, to pastor a new Presbyterian church there. In 1856, Breed became first pastor of the West Spruce Street Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia, a post he held the rest of his life. His works include:

Breed ’s burial place
