Son of Reverend Joab Grace, Seth graduated from Yale College in 1832, then studied at the Yale Theological Seminary. He entered the Presbyterian ministry in 1842, but later moved to the Congregationalist denomination. From 1842 to 1844, he taught mathematics and rhetoric at Newark College, which later became the University of Delaware. In 1861, he became pastor of a Congregational church in Bethany Connecticut. He later retired from the ministry due to illness.
