Son of Reverend Joab Grace, Seth grad­u­at­ed from Yale Coll­ege in 1832, then stu­died at the Yale The­o­lo­gic­al Sem­in­a­ry. He entered the Pres­by­ter­i­an min­is­try in 1842, but lat­er moved to the Con­gre­ga­tion­al­ist de­nom­in­a­tion. From 1842 to 1844, he taught math­e­ma­tics and rhe­tor­ic at New­ark Coll­ege, which lat­er be­came the Un­i­ver­si­ty of Del­a­ware. In 1861, he be­came pas­tor of a Congrega­tional church in Beth­a­ny Con­nec­ti­cut. He lat­er re­tired from the min­is­try due to ill­ness.
