Biography

Ballington was the son of Will­iam Booth and Cath­er­ine Mum­ford, and hus­band of Maud Charles­worth.

He com­mand­ed the Sal­va­tion Ar­my in Aus­tral­ia (1885–87) and Am­er­ica (1887–96).

In 1896, af­ter po­li­cy dis­agree­ments with his fa­ther, he left the Sal­va­tion Ar­my and found­ed Vol­un­teers of Am­er­ica, serv­ing as its pre­si­dent for 44 years.
