Blackie was educated at Marischal College, Aberdeen, Scotland, and the University of Edinburgh. After studying in Göttingen, Berlin, and Rome, Blackie became a lawyer in 1834. In 1839, he became Professor of Humanity at Marischal College, Aberdeen, and in 1841, Professor of Latin at Marischal, and in 1850 Professor of Greek at the University of Edinburgh.
