Son of Val­en­tine Black­er of Ma­ry­le­bone, Max­well at­tend­ed Mer­ton Coll­ege, Ox­ford, and be­came an Ang­li­can priest in 1848. He served as cur­ate in sev­er­al lo­ca­tions, in­clud­ing St. Bar­na­bas, Pim­li­co.
