Bennett studied at the Royal Academy of Music under George Macfarren and Charles Steggall; in Berlin under H. Barth (piano) and F. Kiel (composition); and in Munich (1885–87) under H. Bussmeyer (piano) and Josef Rheinberger (composition). He served as organist at St. John’s Church, Pimlico, London; and as organist and Master of the Choristers at Lincoln Cathedral (1895–1930).
