Educated in Ger­ma­ny, Baum­bach emi­grat­ed to Am­er­ica around 1855.

He taught pi­ano and or­gan in Bos­ton, Mas­sa­chu­setts, and lat­er in Chi­ca­go, Il­li­nois.
