Biography

A page in the cha­pel of Charles X in his ear­ly years, Ba­tiste be­gan stu­dy­ing at the Im­pe­ri­al Con­ser­va­to­ry in 1830.

While there, he won priz­es in sol­feg­gio, har­mo­ny and ac­com­pa­ni­ment, coun­ter­point and fugue, and or­gan. In 1840, he won the Prix de Rome (with Fran­çois Ba­zin).

In 1842, Ba­tiste be­came or­gan­ist at St. Ni­co­las des Champs church in Pa­ris, where he served 12 years.

He then be­came or­gan­ist at Saint Eu­stache Church. In Ap­ril 1855, while at Saint Eu­stache, he played the or­gan in the pre­miere of Hec­tor Ber­li­oz’ Te De­um, con­duct­ed by Ber­li­oz.
