Biography

Cyrus was the son of George Bar­tol and An­na Giv­en, and hus­band of Eli­za­beth H. How­ard.

He was a gra­du­ate of Bow­doin Col­lege, Bruns­wick, Maine (1832); Har­vard Di­vi­ni­ty School (1835); and Har­vard Col­lege (DD 1859).

He be­came co-pas­tor with Charles Low­ell at the West Church in Bos­ton, Mas­sa­chu­setts, March 1, 1837. Af­ter Low­ell’s death in 1861, he was sole pas­tor.
