Son of song­writ­er Eu­gene Bart­lett, Sr., Gene was ed­u­cat­ed at John Brown Un­i­ver­sity (GA) & Ok­la­ho­ma Bap­tist Un­i­ver­si­ty (BM, hon­or­a­ry DMus). He served as min­is­ter of mu­sic at three Bap­tist church­es in Ar­kan­sas; at Trin­i­ty Bap­tist Church, Ok­la­ho­ma Ci­ty (1947-54); and Di­rect­or of Church Mu­sic for the Bap­tist Gen­er­al Con­ven­tion of Ok­la­ho­ma (1954). He was in­duct­ed into the South­ern Gos­pel Mu­sic As­so­ci­a­tion Hall of Fame in 2000.
