Barker became a school teacher when Gospel songs were becoming popular in evangelistic services in the 19th Century, and wrote several songs. Having married a Mr. Barker, she and her husband moved to Montana with the pioneers. In 1888, they moved to San Rafael, California, where she lived the rest of her life.
