William was the son of Elisha Ballantine and Betsey Ann Watkins.
He was a Congregational minister, educator and New Testament scholar. He taught at the Young Men’s Christian Association College, Springfield, Massachusetts, and was president of Oberlin College, Ohio (1891–96).
