Ballantine was a Con­gre­ga­tion­al min­is­ter, ed­u­cat­or and New Test­a­ment schol­ar. He taught at the Young Men’s Christ­ian As­so­ci­a­tion Coll­ege, Spring­field, Mass­a­chu­setts, and was pre­si­dent of Ober­lin Coll­ege (1891-6). His works in­clude:
