Son of James Bak­er, Chancellor of the Diocese of Dur­ham, Hen­ry was educated at Win­ches­ter, Coop­er’s Hill, and Ex­e­ter College, Ox­ford (BMus 1867). He worked as a civil engineer, especially in building railroads in In­dia. He is sometimes confused with Hen­ry Will­iams Bak­er (1821–1877).
